Step By Step Drawing Instructions

Lets start drawing guidelines. Draw them lightly as they will be erased later on. Draw the parallel lines, all on a slant. They all need to be the same distance apart.

Draw a vertical line in the center, that is also on a slight slant.

Lightly lable the brow, nose, and chin line to reference later. Break the part between the brow and the nose into 3 equal parts.

Label the eye line. Draw 2 notches. Draw the notch on the left side further away from the center line than the notch on the right. The right side of the face is going to be a bit smaller since the face is turned slightly away from the viewer.

Make 3 more notches on the right side, the same distance apart as the distance between the center line and the first notch. Make 3 more notches on the left side, the same distance apart as the distance between the center line and the first notch.

Use the guidelines and notches to help you place the eyes. Start off the eyes by drawing a curved line for each eye.

Draw curved lines for her lower eyes, her upper eyelids, and the lines below her eyes.

Add some more details to her eyes.

There has been a lot of backlash with both whitewashing, and blackwashing, some arguments saying that one is better than the other and some saying they are both the same.

Have you ever seen a medical illustration featuring a Black body? Social media users admitted they hadnt when an image of a Black fetus in a Black womans womb went viral this month.

Chidiebere Ibe, 25, is behind the image. The Nigerian medical student, who will enter Kyiv Medical University in Ukraine next month, describes himself as a self-taught medical illustrator. He said hes spent at least a year learning to draw anatomy, focusing on Black skin every step of the way.

I wasnt expecting it to go viral, Ibe, an aspiring pediatric neurosurgeon, said of the image in an interview. I was just sticking up for what I believe in, advocating for equality in health through medical illustrations. I made a deliberate action to constantly advocate that there be inclusion of Black people in medical literature.

He began publishing the images on social media, showing conditions like empyema thoracis and seborrheic eczema on Black skin. Many of the images show skin conditions prevalent with Black people, combating a misrepresentation that often leads to misdiagnosis. The fetus illustration went viral after a Twitter user , writing, Ive literally never seen a black foetus illustrated, ever. The post was retweeted more than 50,000 times, and the illustration garnered more than 88,000 likes on Instagram and even made its way to TikTok. Ibe drew praise from medical professionals far and wide.

1Start with the upper body first. For the head, sketch a circle, and then add a sharp curve at the bottom of it to form an upside-down egg shape.

2Draw the neck next. You can usually just draw two short, straight lines roughly ears-width apart.

Draw a line on the cardboard tube where you need to cut and use scissors to carefully cut the roll to size. I find it easier to use an exacto knife to cut down cardboard tubes but an adult definitely needs to do any cutting with an exacto knife.

How to Draw a Tree (Realistic)

Create a new layer and take Running Color Spray. Make it really big and place some particles there. I prefer adding the yellow ones, they are warm and look nice. These particles might be some seeds spread by air, or fireflies, or just some mystic magical yellow particles like in my case XD Also, add some of those in more concentrated groups within the trees borders those are moss outgrowth. You may also take a different spray or just make the current one smaller if your tree is old and overgrown. Once you are satisfied with how they are located, blur some of them.

Now we will add some grass so our tree wont just fly in the space. The names of the brushes are and Grassland . First, add some dark ones, for the background.

And then several layers of more light ones everythings simple!

Just spread them naturally and keep an eye on other objects: the gras might grow on roots, but the most of it should surround them, so you should also watch the roots to cover it where necessary. Also, add some shadow and light on the grass – this will make it look as an integral part of the artwork and not just plain lines.

Create a Multiply layer, pick the Shadow airbrush with some nearly black shade and draw the shadow from the tree. Nothing special and really nothing more to explain.

Add The Final Details

The last step in your palm tree drawing is to add details. You can do this by including more branches and leaves to your tree, or you can also draw character into the bark of your palm tree. For the latter, draw loose, letter S shaped lines around each part of your tree trunk.

Who pursue careers in the art will always benefit from being able to draw from real-life experiences? Most people find that it is improbable or even impossible to draw trees. If they could go outside, they may not have access to a mature tree that stands alone, in a lovely secluded location, where they could draw.

Fortunately, trees have many characteristics in common, and if they learn about how to draw trees, they can start making their imaginations come to life in pictures.

The vast majority of people will draw a tree trunk, then cap it with a cloud shape if they are supposing to draw a tree the way they are using to. They might draw trees with lots of rectangles instead of branches when the trees are bare.

A trees structure is showing in this tutorial, along with how it follows a formula and has randomness. Beginners could follow my diagrams more closely. Experienced users could vary their approach. There would even be room for leafy bunches in front of some branches.

You will learn how to draw trees in this tutorial using simple techniques that are both realistic and easy. I made some drawings using a regular sketching pencil, but it doesnt matter what medium you use.

Check The Thickness Of The Trunk

Now that the top of the tree is essentially complete, we will soon focus our attention on the left side of the tree. Before doing so, however, lets double-check the thickness of the trunk to make sure there is a realistic flow of the branches into the various areas containing the leaves.

We can begin by sketching some of the main arms of the tree that are likely to diverge from the central trunk. Here, Im sketching a neck for the top and an arm for the right side. Notice how Im keeping the neck thinner than the trunk below it but thicker than the branches above it. There should be a smooth and believable transition in size from the thick trunk at the base of the tree to the tiniest branches at the trees outer edges.

After that, I drew another arm branching from the trunk to the left side of the tree. As this hidden structure takes form, I can now see that I should make my trunk slightly thinner than I originally had it.

At this point, I finished reshaping the trunk and erasing its initial outline. I also sketched a few smaller branches on the left and right side of the tree. This is more of an optional step and was primarily meant to demonstrate how you might draw most of the trees branches first if you were drawing a tree without too many leaves. However, since this tutorial is meant to show you how to draw a tree with leaves, we shouldnt draw too many branches to begin with. If we did, it would be difficult to draw all of the leaves over them.

It’s easy to become overwhelmed when you look at a tree. There are so many details! But to draw one accurately, we need not be consumed with these details. Instead, we’ll breakdown the tree into three simple aspects. We’ll develop each aspect individually, following a structured approach.

Step 1 – Find the Shape – The first thing we’ll do is define the overall shape of the tree. Drawing lightly with the 2H pencil, we’ll concentrate only on the outer contours.

With the outer contours defined, we’ll next find the smaller shapes within the canopy of the tree. These locations are “clumps” or collections of leaves found at the end of the branches.

Step 2 – Develop the Texture – Using the defined shapes as a guide, we’ll start to develop the texture of the leaves. This process requires patience. Take your time and remain consistent. It is not necessary to draw every leaf, instead we’ll create the illusion of collections of leaves. We’ll think about each “clump” or collection of leaves as a form, developing the highlights and shadows on each.

Organic collections of lines can be used to create the illusion of the texture. These lines may be small squiggles that overlap. Be sure to leave an organic and irregular edge around the outer contours of the tree and leave small open spaces within the canopy.

Finalizing The Shadows And Highlights

Start this final step by adding another layer of light shading with an even lighter shade of grey. Add this shading to the same areas that you did for the previous step. This final layer of shading helps to diffuse the harsher shadow from the previous step and make it look more natural. Next, you can take a white shade of your paint or pencils, and add a highlight to the top of each of the bunches of leaves. Make sure that this highlight is well blended into the green color for the most realistic effect.

Draw The Leaflets On The Palm Leaves

Add thin lines close together on each leaf as shown in the picture below. These are the leaflets and its perfectly fine if they all look slightly different from the surrounding leaflets, because that makes them look more natural and realistic.

Palm tree leaves are slotted, and these lines will be the basis for fleshing out these leaves as we can continue with the next steps.

Adding The First Splashes Of Color

The first splashes of color we add are going to be to the branches and the tree trunk. You can add color with the medium of your choice, be that paint or colored pencils. Use a light to medium brown shade as your base color, and carefully color in each of the dainty branches and the main tree trunk. One of the most important parts of tree trunks drawings is getting the color right.

Tip: You do not want to go in with a very dark brown immediately. If you start with a very dark brown, you will not be able to add extra shading details in the next steps.

What You Will Need

• Soft pencil
• Pencil sharpener

A common no 2 pencil, also known as HB, is very universal, but it’s not perfect for every task. We need softer pencils to achieve darker shades. These aren’t some special, expensive toolsI bought mine in a dollar store and they work just fine. Even if you’re not sure if drawing is for you, a set of graded pencils is not a huge investment, and they certainly make learning more convenient!

You’ll also need a pencil sharpener. A blunt tip creates slightly lighter strokes and disturbs the overall texture. Keep your pencils sharp during this tutorial, and remember that soft pencils blunt faster!

As for the paper, it can be any kind. Cheap printer paper will do great for these exercises. However, don’t make your drawings as big as the whole sheetthe smaller the drawing, the less detail it will need. My examples are about 9 cm high.

Draw The Centerpoint Of The Palm Tree

Now that your palm tree has a trunk, add a small circle above the apex of the trunk to hold space for the centerpoint of its leaves. Your circle does not need to be touching the apex of the trunk, as the leaves will fill in to create distance and height for the palm tree.

Stage 6 The Magic Of Light

Create a Color Dodge layer and pick some nice and sunny color of some slightly faded yellow, orange or even red shades. Since we are still drawing a fantasy tree, a strong and blurry lighting effect will make it look mystically and majestically. Using a big soft airbrush lay the light on the current main light on the Color Dodge layer weve created. We dont need the selection at this step, the tree should nearly glow with this effect.

Now create two more layers below the Color Dodge one. They should be with Multiply and Add preferences – as on the pic. Take this brush once more and repeat the same texturing process we did in the third stage – the only difference is that there are Add and Multiply layers now instead of the two Multiply back then. We do this to cover the second pic of the tree with the same texture below a bit to make it look more artistic.

Finish The Top Of The Tree

How to Draw Trees

With a 4B pencil, begin to shade some of the darker shadow areas. Look for the round shapes from earlier and put additional shading over some of the tones previously applied with the 2B pencil. Keep most of these darker shadow areas away from the lighter areas of the same shape. However, you can still put the dark shadow of one leaf collection shape against the lighter leaves of a different collection. Doing this will create some contrast that will help to distinguish the various patches from one another, ultimately leading to a more pleasing end result.

Keep working in the same manner. Continue to look for the different collections of leaves and put shading on and between each one. Use the same short, abstract markings from earlier to create a leafy texture. Keep in mind that the sunlight is coming from the upper right, so you should emphasize the shadows in the lower left area of each group of leaves.

Begin to draw some branches showing through some of the openings on the top area of the tree. Be aware of the path the branches are likely taking from the main trunk of the tree. Although these tinier branches are mostly hidden behind the leaves, they still have an important role in the structure of the tree. Therefore, you should draw branches that reflect that structure.

Outlining The Shape Of The Tree Canopy

In this step of the tree drawing tutorial, we are going to create the general outline of the tree canopy. For this outline, you can use one single continuous line, that dips in and out of the construction arc. Within this continuous canopy line, you want to have sharp curves and arches, that represent the outlines of many leaves. At the bottom of the horizontal baseline, you can wrap this canopy outline around the points where your bark detailing extends above.

Tip: You can use the branch construction lines to help you map out the dips and points of your canopy outline. Once you have finished your outline, you can erase any and all remaining construction lines.

Constructing The Base Outline Of The Conifer Tree

One of the trickiest parts of drawing a pine tree is getting the shape correct. We use an easy construction triangle to help us get this shape spot on! Begin drawing an elongated triangle from the top point of the main trunk construction line. You can end the triangle slightly above the root construction lines.

Make sure that your triangle is even and extends the same distance on either side of the main trunk construction line.

How To Draw A Vampire: Outline Step By Step

Step 1: Draw the vampire’s face

We start outlining our vampire by drawing the face contour. Join the squared-off head with the pointed chin by rounding off the cheekbones. Then draw the long pointed nose, outline the mouth, and draw the fangs. Then redraw and fill in the eyes and eyebrows.

Step 2: Outline the hair and ears

The next step is to outline the hair – feel free to make any final adjustments – and the ears.

Step 3: Draw the vampire’s arms and hands

Start with outlining the hands- we are rounding off the finger joints, but keeping the sharp, pointy, claw-like fingertips.

Next, draw the coat sleeves. Notice we have skipped one of the sketch lines used to draw the hand – the forearm is now hidden inside the wide coat sleeve. We have also added a little downfold to the upper sleeve line.

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, dont press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

Step 1: Draw the vampire’s nose as a small angled line. Sketch lightly at first so you can erase if you make a mistake. The shape should be similar to a less-than sign with the bottom end curled up.

A modified stick figure that includes all the joints! Start by drawing the head, then the spine, the hips, the shoulders, the elbows, the wrists, the knees, and the ankles. This will be your guide, so draw this lightly as you will also need to erase this later.

Going down from the circle add the lower part of the head. To make the character look more cute make this fairly small in relation to the upper part of the head and not very tall.

Both sides should be joined at the bottom with the small curve of the chin.

This next step is very similar to the previous one. The difference here, however, is that you will now be able to see our little friend come to life. The ovals we use for the arms are exactly the same shape as those we used for the legs. The right arm is going to be exactly the same size as the right leg, and you can place it just above it, between the leg and the head. The right arm and leg should look as if they are reflecting themselves exactly.

The left arm is going to be slightly bigger than the left leg, but the same shape. In terms of the placement for the left arm, you want it to be at a slight angle, with the very bottom sitting on the top of the square. You also want to position the left arm so that it slightly overlaps with the head. This position will create a perspective with the arm just in front of part of the face. When I started the research for this chapter, I thought it would be easy. Silly me.

It did start out easy, anyway. My father, C. K. Havekost, sent me his photo of Toka, an English Staffordshire Terrier who lived with my parents for many years.Toka was a real sweetheart, and had no fierceness in him at all. But I really think he looks the part of the three-headed dog. Thats his picture at the top of the page.

Then I tried dog snarl and got lucky, and found a great picture on a site from England that showcased puppets used in movies. Unfortunately, that website is no longer available, so youll need to search for a picture to use.

I like to use a photo realistic references. The reason why is to avoid as much as I can other artists drawings as references to not contaminate my own style trying to imitate other artists styles. To depend completely on drawings of other artists can limit your own creativity. I think it can be useful to inspire yourself or to copy certain details. However, if we depend solely on the works of other artists, we can easily pass from creators to imitators or copyists without realizing it. We will also be constantly comparing our work with that of the artist we are taking as a reference.

Of course is impossible to find real-life photos of a fantastic creature like a Dragon. But we have many reptiles in nature that can give us some hints on how a dragon could look. Skin texture, proportions, the shape of the head and other body parts can some of the aspects of our drawing that can be inspired by real-life animals.

How To Draw A Chinese Dragon

No matter how you slice it, Chinese dragons are very specialized. They sort of look like a salamander with a big head and scales! There is always going to be the issue of length for Chinese dragons. Start with a snake-like shape that you like. The head is easy to draw from looking at these drawings so have reference pictures as inspiration. These will start at least twice the length of each leg on the body as for the front legs.

Draw The Smaller Bends & Curves

How to draw a hand holding Rose flower | Pencil Sketch

Once you finish the rough outline of the hand you can add some of the smaller curves such as those at the base of each finger and the bottom of the palm. Also see the example below for the placement of the joints and make sure the bends of the thumb and the light bends of some of the fingers are in the the right place.

You can see the rough position of the finger/thumb joints in the example above. This can be helpful in estimating where they bend as well as the positing of some of the smaller wrinkles on the hand.

Draw The Fingers & Thumb

Drawing the fingers for this pose is probably the most challenging part of all of the examples in this tutorial. It may be helpful to first take a look at the joint drawing example further down before drawing this step.

The parts of the fingers from the knuckles to the first joint are fairly simple. Draw these fanning out from the hand similar to the previous examples. The next set of sections up from that is facing the viewer at a very sharp angle making them appear very short or almost invisible. You will need to take this into account when drawing if you want to create a believable pose. From there to the tips each section are pretty much fully visible. Draw the tip of the thumb and index finger pointing slightly more inwards than the first set of sections. You can draw the other two fingers at pretty much same angles as their knuckles to first join parts.

Consider Shape When Drawing Hands

This is a good section to start discussing the drawing process:

Draw the contour shape of the hand first, before getting into the details of what goes inside of the shape. Look at good reference and try to carefully observe what goes into the shape outline of the hand, what features are visible? Study the shape of the palm and build the shape from there.

Keep the following in mind when observing the shapes you are drawing:

1. There are two main masses to deal with when drawing the hand: that of the palm and the one of the thumb attached to it. These masses shift, the palm folds, but the changes are minimal compared to the movement of the fingers.

2. The middle finger is the longest and is at the apex of an arch created by the fingers when they are extended.

3. When fingers are extended, their shape has a backward curve to it. Incorporate this backward curve when drawing hands with fingers flaring out, or the drawing will not look natural.

4. The palm has an arch to it pointing inward to the knuckles. Notice that the palm of the hand has a hollow in the middle, forming a sort of a spoon-like shape, especially when the thumb is brought close to the hand.

5. When clenched into a fist, the thumb does not stretch beyond the second finger.

Keep the above pointers in mind regarding the shapes when drawing hands. Now lets add some more information to your visual library by looking at important landmarks.

I made this quick poster to show how to do it right away, and then if you want more details, scroll below. You can see that I used different colors for each step. Pink/red was the first color: as in the first line to be done on each step, purple is next, and blue is last, the light green is what was erased at the end of the step. Beyond that, its just imagining the petals, like in step 1, and putting them together to form a flower. Whether you are doing a sideways view, or view from the top, its all about putting the petals together.

They were different then the Prismacolors that I love and use all the time, but a decent cheaper option for anyone that would want to color with pencils. I also used Strathmore Bristol Paper, 11 by 14 inchesfor this drawing.

Step 1 First draw a D like shape for the middle part of the hand. Draw 5 lines from the middle part as the outline for the fingers.

Following a drawing tutorial online to draw a rose step by step is only one aspect of learning to draw roses. Practice different techniques on your own, and dont get caught up in every detail. Dont try to get every single piece exactly right, warns illustrator and drawing instructor Lucas Elliott. Its more about the idea of what the flower looks like and looking at the composition of the whole. No perfect rose exists in nature each one is different so quirks in illustrated roses can enhance their realism.

Sketch yourself a dozen roses.

If youre having trouble, draw it again and again. Fill a page with roses. Fill a sketchbook with roses, says Elliott. One of the best things that I’ve found for my students is gesture drawing where you quickly draw the essence of the object. If you draw it quickly, in 30 seconds to a few minutes, it forces you to consider whats important, and you start to understand the shape of the rose.

To finish the drawing draw the lines along the palm of the hand and the fingernails. Again same as the other poses the nail on the thumb will be viewed on an angle and should be drawn narrower.

To help that the sections of the fingers from the last joint to the tip are at a slight angle draw the fingernails just a tiny bit farther away from the tips. This will make the bottom of the fingers appear like they are angled facing more towards the viewer.

How To Draw Roses: Detailed Step By Step Directions

I drew three roses, the first one is facing the viewer, the second one is a bit sideways, and the last one is facing half way away from the viewer.

Start by drawing a small oval shape. That will be the center of the rose. Add a few lines for the inside of the center and the outside of the center. Then begin adding petals.

Keep adding rose petals radiating from the center. They are just slightly curved lines going around in the circle when you think about it.

Keep adding more and more petals as you go. I like to make some of the petals a bit pointy toward the center.

For the rose that is facing the viewer, just keep working in a circle, adding anywhere between 3 to 5 petals for each layer.

Try to make sure that the flower looks somewhat balanced. For the photo on the right, I put dots to indicate which petals were drawn first.

Add a few more petals going all around the circle. All done with the first flower!

Dont forget to add a stem and a few leaves.

Here is the first rose completely done, and the beginnings of the second rose.

Time to do the second flower!

For the second flower, start with a tube with a slight opening, like the photo on the left. Then, change the opening by adding a few curved lines to indicate petals.

To make a slight opening, draw two curved lines going from the back of the rose . The lines should form a heart like shape in the front of the rose. Then add a few more indications that the petals are bent and curved .

How To Draw Anime Or Manga Hand Holding A Sword

Start with the major shapes of the hand.

Because in this case we will have the index finger pointing slightly away from the other fingers we will draw it separately. You can start drawing the rest of the fingers as one big shape .

After you have the major proportions draw in the sword. Draw out the individual fingers afterwards.

Clean up your drawing.

Draw in the smaller details.

Just as the previous example you can also use this view and position of the hand to show it holding other objects or holding on to things in a more relaxed manner.

Sketch The Overall Shape & Size Of The Rose

Start drawing the rose by first sketching its overall shape sizing it to your drawing area. The outer shape sketch does not need to be the exact outline trace of the rose instead you want to establish a sort of construction frame that the rose will fit into and that you will then use to draw the more detailed shape.

This step is very important so do your best to get it right. Make sure the shape is not overly long, tall, or too skewed in any direction in comparison to the rose you are drawing. If you make a mistake at this stage the rest of your drawing will be off.

Start drawing the hands with basic shapes. Draw a rectangle and a letter V shape.

Start drawing the fingers.

Draw a #2-like shape on the left side and a letter J shape on the right side. Draw an oval in between.

Start drawing finger nails with curved lines. Draw a letter L shape and a backwards letter D shape on the right.

Finish drawing the finger nails. Continue drawing the basic shapes of the fingers.

Finish up the basic structure of the hands.

Add the lines along the palm and the smaller wrinkles along the fingers and thumb. Keep in mind that as the thumb is pulled back some of the wrinkles on it will be smoothed out. To emphasize this you can even leave out some of the wrinkles that would naturally still be visible.

Once you finish adding all of the smaller details of the hand you can go over your drawing with darker more solid lines.

Many emotions can be revealed from your childs drawings, but dont get too carried away with the things they might mean until your child has had time to explain them to you. However, there are some points that researchers have found that might display what a child is really feeling.

• Detailed, careful drawings may reveal a child who feels the need to try very hard.
• Bold strokes, especially if close together, can be a sign of stress, strong feelings, determination or anger, while softer marks suggest a gentler nature.
• The quality of line can also be significant a figure drawn with light, wavering, broken lines, reveals a hesitant, insecure child who appears to think as he goes along. By contrast the bold, continual, freely drawn line is expressive of self-confidence, and a feeling of security.

When drawing figures, the size, and the relative size of the figures drawn is considered to be significant, with more important or dominant figures being drawn larger.

Adding Detail Around The Eye

You will be adding little details that all eyes have. Some lines are placed above the eyelid and subtle lines underneath the eye. Depending on age, these lines will be deeper looking or softer shadows using a blending stump. Being that any dragon needs to have scales around the eyes, use your imagination and photo referencevery lightly pencil-in small scales around the rims of the eyelid.

These are all based on wrinkles and wrinkle patterns around the eye. Follow tighter scales around the very edges of the eyelids. Then fill all the open spots with progressively random scales that follow a natural wrinkle map.

Girls usually draw rounded shapes, including flowers, hearts, while angles, boxes, and straighter lines are characteristics of boys, along with cars, buses, etc. In general terms, there is a tendency in children to prefer to draw their own gender.

In addition, some researchers have reported that girls tend to use more colours per drawing than boys do, with a preference for warmer colours and that boys demonstrate a preference towards cooler colours .

The choice of colour apparently can be significant:

• Black and purple suggest dominance, and can be favoured by a child who is relatively demanding. Blue is popular with children who have a caring nature and enjoy company.

Geologic Cross Section! How to draw or construct a geologic cross-section!

Sometimes strike and dip are reported without the dip direction specified . When strike and dip are reported like this, there is a convention at play called the right-hand rule. Imagine holding your right hand flat on the dipping surface, with your fingers pointing downhill. If you extend your thumb straight out to the side, thats the strike direction. Based on that rule, a bed striking at 045º could only be dipping to the SE, so its unnecessary to add the SE when you record the orientation.

The problem is, another version of the right-hand rule is that you point your thumb down-dip, and your fingers point in the strike direction. The strike and dip for a bed oriented 045º/19º SE would be reported as 225º/19º using that version. If you saw that notation and assumed the first version of the right-hand rule was in use, you would conclude the bed was dipping NW. So, if someone hires you to do geologic mapping and they want you to use the right-hand rule, make sure you find out which one. To avoid confusion, we will not use a right-hand rule for this lab, and will just have you write down the dip direction instead, like in Figure 7.7.

Vertical And Horizontal Scale

To show significant details of stratigraphic variation, it is usually necessary to exaggerate the vertical scale with respect to the horizontal scale on a stratigraphic cross section. It is important to realize the effect that this distortion has on reservoir geometry and angular relationships of geological surfaces. The small angular differences between stratigraphic horizons that account for thickness variations are strongly exaggerated in such a section. The apparent dip of a bed in a vertically exaggerated cross section is related to true dip by the following equation:

• E = apparent dip in exaggerated section
• = true dip
• V = vertical exaggeration, or

, the ratio of vertical scale to horizontal scale

As a result of this relationship, low dips are exaggerated and appear larger, whereas higher dips all appear close to vertical. The effect is illustrated in Table 1, where selected values of true and apparent dip are shown for vertical exaggerations of five and ten times. Note that two horizons differing in dip by only 3° appear to differ by 14° and 22°, respectively, for the two values of vertical exaggeration. Any attempt to render structural form on a stratigraphic cross section is schematic but should take into account this effect. It is also important to remember that the image one creates with a stratigraphic cross section is a distortion of reality.

Subset Your Outcrop Data

The relevance of this section depends on the scale of your cross section and the distribution of surface data on your map. In most cases an even spread of surface data is preferable for geological maps, however, in some large mapping areas it is only practical to collect data along traverses, which are often pre-selected for section building anyway. To make a subset of the data I perform a line buffer. This creates a polygon that will contain all the data you wish to subset and use in your cross section, thus excluding any irrelevant data that will prevent accurate section interpretation:

• Measure an appropriate distance from your line that will allow the buffer to cover enough of your data for making a subset . The size of the buffer will vary greatly depending on the scale of your mapping, complexity of the geology and density of surface measurements, but this part will be up to you and you may need to have a few attempts with different buffers before you get it just right.

• To buffer: Vector> Geoprocessing Tools> Buffer

• Fill the dialogue box, being sure to direct QGIS to the correct input vector . If this vector file has more than one shape in it you will need to select the line you wish to buffer prior to accessing the Geoprocessing Tools, then make sure you tick the Use only selected features box.

• Add in your buffer distance and type the file path to your output and go!

Drawing a Geologic Cross Section

I work with engineering geology, and my workflow includes making many cross sections of a given site, with data from maps, fieldwork and boreholes.

What I’m looking for is a way of taking many cross sections and making a 3D model, with open source software, even with lots of drawing work, but preferably with few code or programming knowledge.

So, when I first noticed this software , that takes many cross sections and gives, as a result, a 3D model, made of solids and not just surfaces, I thought it would be the perfect software. The image below is from the software website.

Given that I don’t have the resources to buy it, I was thinking if there wouldn’t be a free alternative to this approach.

So I think the approach would be:

Take the cross sections and combine them all in a GIS software, resulting in a fence diagram

Interpolate between all of the cross sections, resulting in surfaces, or even better, solids, each one representing a geological layer or lithotype

Make new cross sections between the former ones, to refine and adjust the model.

So, I think the 3rd step means that there is no need of a complex interpolation algorithm, because the geological complexity would come from the cross sections, that are human made, not from the interpolation, that would be computer made.

The approach would be a first, simple, computer made interpolation, refined by manual adjustments.

Orientation And Layout Of A Cross Section

Linear cross sections are preferably oriented perpendicular to the major structural trends . Bends in the section can be introduced to accommodate variable structural trends or to show different features. In a straight section, much of the data will usually be projected into the plane of section. Accomplishing this projection requires detailed knowledge of the strike direction. If the structural trend is variable so that the cross section is not everywhere perpendicular to strike, data should be projected along strike onto the section. To fully represent the structure, several transverse sections may be linked by a longitudinal or strike section running parallel to the strike. Strike sections may also be important in showing the plunge of a structure, culminations in a fold, or the importance of secondary structures .

Strike And Dip: Describing The Orientation Of Rock Layers

Strike and dip are two parameters used to measure the orientation of rock layers. To get an intuitive sense of what they mean, have a look at the roof of the structure in Figure 7.4. If we needed to describe the orientation of the side of the roof above the long wall with three windows, we might start by identifying how the wall with windows or the ridge of the roof are oriented. According to the direction arrows in the photo, the ridge runs north-south. Next we would need to say how steep the roof is, and we could describe that in terms of how far off the roof is from being horizontal.

For geological layers, the strike is analogous to the direction the roof ridge is running. It is defined as the intersection of a horizontal plane and an inclined surface. You can visualize this as the line formed where the tilted rock layer in Figure 7.5 meets the surface of the lake. Dip is the angle between that horizontal plane and the inclined surface , measured perpendicular to the strike line down towards the inclined surface.

On a geological map, information about the bed orientation is provided using a T-shaped symbol, as shown on the surface of the bed in Figure 7.5. The top of the T is stretched out along the strike direction, and the vertical part points in the dip direction. The dip angle is written next to the symbol.

Measuring Strike From A Map

In many cases strike cannot be measured directly from the map without applying some geometric methods since the beds run at an angle. Vertical beds are an exception to this, however. You can measure the strike of a vertical bed by measuring the angle between one of the beds contacts and the north arrow . In Figure 7.8, a line has been extended down from the north arrow to the contact of the bed. The angle between the north arrow and the bed is 40°. The strike of the bed is therefore 040° .

A geologic map shows the distribution of rock beds on the surface of the Earth. Geologic maps are often combined with topographic maps.

The pattern made by rocks on Earth’s surface depends on the orientation of the beds and the topography. Topographic variation often causes the exposure of rock beds to appear in complex patterns, even when the shape of the bed itself is not complicated. In this lesson you will learn how to draw a geologic cross-section. You will then be able to translate complex surface patterns into a picture of the rocks beneath the Earth’s surface. Before we can do that, however, you must first learn how the orientation of planar geological structures is described.

INTRODUCTION

OBJECTIVE

Cross-sections often accompany geological, geo-morphological, engineering, tectonic, and other maps in scientific and technical bulletins, open file reports, and professional and industrial organizational proceedings. They can be helpful to determine fossil fuels and aquifers, and to locate and describe potential geologic hazards. They can also be utilized to locate subsurface minerals, hydrocarbons, geothermal areas, and construction materials .

MANUAL TECHNIQUE FOR CROSSSECTION CONSTRUCTION

These are the suggested steps by Maher to draw a cross-section:

D Geological Structure :

There are three series of rock beds in the map. The upper series is horizontal in structure. It is composed of two rock beds S & T. The thickness of the rock cannot be measurable from the map due to its horizontal manner but it can be measure from the cross-section. Both the rock beds are the same thickness. It is 100 ft each.

The middle series is Uniclinal in structure. In section line AB, it shows an apparent dip of about 2 degrees. The middle series is composed of two rock beds O & P. The thickness of the O bed is 100 ft and the thickness of the P bed is not measurable due to the absence of its upper bedding plane.

The lower series is folded in structure. There is a prominent anticline in the middle of the region and a syncline on the eastern side of the region. Therefore the entire region is consisting of three folded limbs with their different dip and direction at lower series rock beds. The lower series is composed of D, E, F & G beds where D is the oldest lower bed, and G is the top bed in this series. The thicknesses of the beds are 200 ft and 300 ft for E & F respectably, whereas the thicknesses of D & G beds cannot be measured due to the absence of lower and upper bedding planes for D and G beds respectably.

Use Qprof To Build Your Profile

Now the fun begins

• To create your profile click the first tab and define your input DEMs and your input line . You can add slope to your profile which will plot an additional line, useful in some engineering situations. There are also variables that can be modified, such as vertical exaggeration and profile direction.

• Then just click the create profile button and hey-presto. The python script will create an additional window within QGIS that has additional functions for editing the plot position and other parameters such as line thickness, axes and labels.

• You can the save your profile in a number of useful formats . With the ability to save as a scalable vector the section can be easily imported into drafting software such as Inkscapeso the cross section interpretation can be performed.

You can also create a profile from a list of GPX points. This is a great way to quickly build a section when you are in the field and it doesnt require a DEM.

What kind of rocks are found in this map area ? How many units can you see?

Draw a geological cross-section between the points X and Y indicated on Map 2. Note: you will have to prepare a cross-section from scratch for this exercise, but you can use the format from the Map 1 cross-section as a guide. If you are not sure where to start, use the questions from Map 1 to guide you through the process of exploring Map 2 and preparing your cross-section. Do not forget to incorporate the features described in the L.O.T.S. acronym. This is a more challenging cross-section you will probably have to make several changes to get it right. Make sure you have an eraser with you!

Every geological cross-section must include a legend, the orientation of the line the cross-section represents on the map, a title, and a scale . To help us remember, we abbreviate these four key parts with the acronym LOTS.

Legend: The legend is a key to the patterns used to identify each unit on the cross-section. The units are ordered from oldest formation at the bottom of the legend to youngest unit at the top of the legend.

Orientation: The orientation of the cross-section is the direction that the cross-section line makes on Earth . You can indicate the orientation by writing the corresponding direction at each end of the cross-section .

Title: A descriptive title for the cross-section. You can include the letters used to identify the line on the original geological map in the title .

Scale: Include a ratio scale and/or a bar scale to show the scale of the cross-section. The vertical and horizontal scales should be the same, so you only need to include one scale on the cross-section.

How To Draw A Cross

Ive wanted to write this blog post for a long time, but this weekend pushed it forward on my list because of something my daughter said to me. As some of you who follow me on social media may know, my two kids are runners. This past weekend my daughter competed in the Region 4 USATF Junior Olympic Cross Country meet in Tallahassee, Florida. She had a great meet and qualified to run at the National JO meet in December.

As I pulled up the course maps for December in Alabama, I noticed that they were unlike any course map Ive seen over the years. There are topographic lines on the map! For once, you can look at the map and see where the hills and valleys are on the cross country course. The first thing I thought to do was to make a cross-section of my daughters course map to see if it was flat or hilly. We live in coastal South Carolina so running hills can be tough on our athletes. When I mentioned making the cross-section, my daughter said, you are the only person who would think to make a cross-section of a cross country course. Really? Certainly, there is at least one other geologist parent attending that meet who whipped up a quick cross-section. Much to our delight, her 3K course looks relatively flat. Yippie!

For this demonstration, I am using Stone Mountain, Georgia because it has a significant elevation difference than the cross country course. Here is a topographic map of Stone Mountain.
